Paul and Barnabas continue their mission from Paphos all the way to Pisidian Antioch. 




Question: Have ever been able to teach or give guidance to someone else on your hobby? 
How does the other person's attitude influence your ability to share and his or her ability to learn? 

Today's study examines how we can be ready to share the gospel with anyone willing to listen. 

MIXED RESPONSES: Verses 42-45

Application Point: WE CAN EXPECT A VARIETY OF RESPONSES TO THE GOSPEL MESSAGE.

Paul and Barnabas in Antioch

42 As they were leaving, the people[a] urged them to speak about these matters the following Sabbath. 43 After the synagogue had been dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking with them and urging them to continue in the grace of God.

44 The following Sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of the Lord.[b] 45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what Paul was saying, insulting him.

SIDENOTE (SN): Jewish faith was based on the law of Moses. As Paul well knew, obedience to the law is what defined a truly righteous person in the eyes of most Jews. But he also understood the paradigm shift that Jesus had created when He came to earth.  

Question: What responses can we expect to encounter when we share the gospel? How can you overcome rejection as you witness for Christ?

Gentile Believers: Verses 46-48

Application Point: GOD USES HIS PEOPLE TO TAKE THE GOSPEL TO THOSE WHO ARE FAR FROM HIM. 

46 Paul and Barnabas boldly replied, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

I have made you
a light for the Gentiles
to bring salvation
to the ends of the earth.”[c]

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they rejoiced and honored the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed to eternal life believed.

SN: When Paul and Barnabas shifted their focus to the Gentiles, they experienced both positive and negative results.

Spread The Gospel: Verses 49-52

Application Point: THE GOSPEL SPREADS FROM PERSON TO PERSON UNTIL WHOLE AREAS HAVE HEARD THE GOOD NEWS. 

49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jews incited the prominent God-fearing women and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their district. 51 But Paul and Barnabas shook the dust off their feet against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

Question: What role can we play as individuals in helping the gospel spread? How has God used you recently to share the good news?
